Here is another Massey Ferguson that I
picked up. This one is much larger than the MF-8 and in the
"Garden Tractor" class. This is the "Variable-Speed" version of
this line which uses a Reeves Drive system and a 4-speed rear
axle. The Variable-Speed lever has five settings when used in
full, will give you 20 forward gear ratios and five in reverse.
(Regardless of the engine speed) This is great for running
attachments like snow-blowers or rear-tillers.
I have found the 42" mower deck that I have made a deal to buy from
another Massey enthusiast. I hope to pick that up soon and then
start looking for a snow-plow for the front of it. I need to get
the motor running, I believe it suffers from the SSI ignition failure.
There is a repair for this which will convert it over to an
1970's Chrysler Corp electronic ignition system. Stay tuned for more!
You can really get a feeling for
how much bigger this is than a standard lawn tractor platform.
The rear rims on the little tractor are as big as the ones in the front
of it's big brother.
I do plan to swap the headlight kit onto the MF-12 and put the block
out plates back into the MF-8 down the road.
Just a quick photo update....
I have it running now with the ignition conversion and I have
picked up a 48" plow blade for it.
I had to seriously rebuild the plow and my own mounting system for it
too. I have plenty of photos, so it will get it's own page soon.
It's looking pretty sharp with a repainted grille and headlights
installed from the MF-8. The blade had all the worn out
holes and bent parts welded and repaired before I painted it all up.
The decal was bought off e-bay just to really set it apart.
And just a couple photos of the
ignition conversion... Here is the new external coil mounted to
the tractor.
And here is a shot of the wiring
and Chrysler control module.
I used a new ignition switch, and fully rewired the entire tractor.
Better updates when I get some time to play with it!
